Lieutenant Colonel Martin (Marty) G. Desilets, a decorated U.S. Air Force veteran and devoted family man, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024, at the age of 90. Born on April 17, 1934, in Springfield, Massachusetts, Marty dedicated his life to serving his country and his loved ones. Over the course of Marty's distinguished military flying career, he earned numerous awards and accolades, including the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Air Force Commendation Medal, among many others. He was a combat veteran, having bravely flown the B-52 on more than 80 missions during the Vietnam War. After his military service, Marty continued his passion for flying as a pilot for the Kiewit Company.

Marty is survived by his beloved wife, Helen Desilets; his children, Tad Desilets and Lisa Laughery (Doug Johns); his Son-in-law Perry Herrmann; his Niece Sue Krautbaurd; his nephew John Desilets; and his grandchildren, Matthew Olsen (wife Rebekah and daughters Pippa and Daisy), Adam Olsen (Molly Dean), Max Mulleneaux, and Stormie Desilets. Marty’s love for his family was evident in the annual two-week Florida trips he organized during his grandchildren’s childhood, fostering memories they will cherish forever.

Marty lived his life in service to his country and his family. He also volunteered with the VFW, driving fellow veterans to medical appointments until he was no longer able. Marty ensured his loved ones, especially his wife Helen, were well cared for and prepared for the future. His legacy of love, service, and dedication will forever be remembered by those who knew him.

Graveside services will be held on November 27th at 1:30 p.m. at Omaha National Cemetery, where Lt. Col. Martin G. Desilets will be laid to rest with full military honors, a fitting tribute to a life dedicated to serving his country with distinction and pride.
