Mel was born and grew up in Manhattan KS. After high school, he attended Kansas State University before enlisting in the US Navy, where he served during the Vietnam War. After the Navy, he worked in Los Angeles CA as a photographer. He graduated from California State University Long Beach with a BA and an MA in English.
In 1969, Mel married Vicki in Hermosa Beach CA and moved to San Diego in 1970, where he worked as a photographer until 1975. There they welcomed their first son, Eric , in 1973. After earning a MS in Library Science from Emporia State University in Kansas, the family moved to Omaha in 1977, where he worked as a Reference Librarian at the University of Nebraska at Omaha until his retirement in 2003. In 1980, son Adam was added to the family. Mel earned his final degree, his PhD. in English from UNO in 1986.
He enjoyed photography, travelling with his family, and walking. He was active in 2 walking clubs, his church, and the German-American Society.
Preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Fred Bohn; sister, Phyllis; brothers, Robert and Richard. He is survived by his wife, Vicki Bohn; sons, Eric (Rie) Bohn of Forest Hills NY and Adam (Heather) Bohn of West Hartford CT; grandchildren, Sophia and Miles of NY, Ezra, Ezekiel, Betzalel and Shirelle Iris of CT; nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass 11:00 AM Monday, April 8th, at St. Barnabas Catholic Church, 129 North 40 St, Omaha NE. Interment 3:30 PM Monday, April 8th, at the Omaha National Cemetery.
